Seeing someone become a better person because of you is life’s greatest source of happiness. But then positively influencing others isn’t easy. For that, countless examples from history show that you need extraordinary leadership skill, larger-than-life ambitions and the intent to solve big problems.
What if you have none?
What if your leadership skill isn’t as sharp as, say, Gandhi? What if your ambitions aren’t as big as that of Steve Jobs? And what if you don’t really see any fitting solvable problem out there as Mark Zuckerberg sees?
In the mainstream narrative, you’re as ordinary as it gets.
But here’s something interesting: You can still influence people.
As cliché as it may sound, it is true…
Small things make a big difference.
Here are 5 steps how you can have a positive influence on people around you:
1. Be a good human being
This is the most fundamental part of the process. Take the example of any individual who positively influenced others. Above all, they were a good human being.
So, strive to become a better human in every facet of life. Be good, be kind. Nourish the right thoughts that will navigate you to the right actions.
People only get positively influenced by those who are good at heart.
2. Focus on your happiness
How can you influence others when you’re not inspired yourself? How can you ask others to be happy when you aren’t happy yourself?
Before you try to fix others, you’ve got to fix yourself.
So, make your happiness a top priority. Do things that you love. Spend time with people who make you feel good.
When you’re happy from inside, your ideas and actions to influence others would become quite meaningful, coming very naturally.
3. Be empathetic to everyone
Even those who have done the worst to you, they have a story why they did that. Those who dislike you, they have reasons – however irresponsible – to dislike you.
Being empathetic is one of the most important things to create a positive vibe around you.
Empathy manifests in happiness. Moreover, it’s a trait that others admire. And when others are admiring who you are, they are more likely to get influenced by you.
4. Lead by example
Don’t preach “leave your seat for the seniors” when you’re not doing it yourself.
Don’t preach “never chase money” when all your actions are money-driven.
The world already has too many preachers who say one thing to others, but do the complete opposite themselves. People can see through such individuals and they never trust them.
Like what Gandhi once said, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Act in the right way and lead by an example.
Hush down and let your action do the talking.
5. Help as many people as you can
Every person you help, they will remember you for the rest of their lives.
Every person who you show kindness to, they will remember you.
Help and kindness are two of the most powerful tools to win over people. So, the next time whenever you see someone in any problem, go out of your way to help them.
Understand that, more often than not, people don’t want your money. Just showing up and being by their side for support can be the sufficient help they wish for.
So, help as many people as you can. And over the course, all your good karma will return in greater rewards.
The more good you leave around, the more influence you will have on people! This happens eventually if not immediately.
So, keep doing good. Be nice to everyone. Show kindness. Look beyond your own personal ambitions. Have a greater meaning in life.
When you’re living a happy and content life, you will catch people’s attention. You will inspire them, no matter what how many!
